Less Than 24 Hours After Release, Nintendo's 3DS Has Been Hacked

The process of jailbreaking smartphones and cracking security on console gaming rigs like the Xbox 360 has turned into a major media magnet with gaming news outlets. More importantly, it's become a thorn in the paw of the hardware and software giants at the receiving end of the hackers' ire.

Now, a rumor is circulating that another system bit the dust: less than 24 hours after its Japanese launch, Nintendo's 3DS handheld has already been cracked.

Though it took several years after launch to completely hack open Sony's PS3, a handheld cartridge system is less of a challenge in terms of skipping around security measures (especially with how much the 3DS has in common with the first few generations of the DS.) This particular hack was managed using a simple little device known as the R4 flashcart, a DS card reader used for storage and copying of game data; once some of the data inside the 3DS' firmware had been altered to the hackers' preferences, it was easy to duplicate any game onto a blank cartridge.

It's likely the hackers responsible will have an easy time of making these bootleg copies playable on the 3DS, meaning another notch on the bedpost of game pirates the world over. Much as with Xbox Live and PSN, we can expect heavy-handed security measures to be thrown down from Nintendo's Powers that Be in the coming weeks.

But in all likelihood, the hackers will view this as more of a challenge to succeed rather than a hurdle. As with the PlayStation 3, those responsible for drawing the wrath of the developers simply found new loopholes to crawl through when their first options were closed. And if lawsuits couldn't stem the tide of copyright infringements and cracking that's gone on in the last few years, it doesn't look like anything's going to tamp down the geek rebels.

Sometimes conceding defeat is the only way to come out with anything left, yet it doesn't look like there's any kind of win for Nintendo to pull out of this one. The 3DS is obviously still very green, so we'll see what kind of defense they can cook up in the months to come.
